Zain Javadd Malik ( / ˈ m æ l ɪ k / , Urdu: زین جواد ملک ; born 12 January 1993), known mononymously as Zayn, is an English singer and songwriter. Born and raised in Bradford, West Yorkshire, Malik auditioned as a solo contestant for the British music competition The X Factor in 2010. After being eliminated as a solo performer, Malik was brought back into the competition, along with four other contestants, to form the boy band that would become known as One Direction. Malik left the group in March 2015 and subsequently signed a solo recording contract with RCA Records.
Adopting a more alternative R&B music style with his debut studio album Mind of Mine (2016) and its lead single, «Pillowtalk», Malik became the first British male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US with a debut single and debut album. Malik is the recipient of several accolades, including an American Music Award, Billboard Music Award and MTV Video Music Award.
Zain Javadd Malik was born on 12 January 1993 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. His father, Yaser Malik, is British Pakistani, and his mother, Tricia Brannan Malik, is English, and of part Irish descent. His mother converted to Islam upon their marriage. He has one older sister, Doniya, and two younger sisters, Waliyha and Safaa.
Malik grew up in East Bowling, located south of the Bradford city centre. He was raised in a working class family and neighbourhood. He attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School in Bradford. Malik has stated that he started taking pride in his appearance after moving schools at the age of twelve, and as a teenager he took performing arts courses and appeared in school productions. He grew up listening to his father’s urban music records, primarily R&B, hip hop, and reggae. He starting writing raps when he was at school, and sang on stage for the first time when singer Jay Sean visited his school. Malik also did boxing for two years from the ages of 15 to 17. Prior to his music career, he was originally planning to pursue a career as an English teacher.
2010–2015: The X Factor and One Direction
In 2010, 17-year-old Malik auditioned in Manchester for the seventh series of reality-television competition The X Factor, but he actually started entertaining five years before. He sang «Let Me Love You» by Mario as his audition song and was accepted into the next round. Upon auditioning for The X Factor, Malik stated that he was «looking for an experience». He was eliminated before the final round of the competition, but judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell grouped him with fellow competitors Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form a new act for the remainder of the show, the boy band that would become known as One Direction. The group quickly gained popularity in the UK, finished in third place, and were subsequently signed by Cowell to a reported £2 million Syco Records record contract. They subsequently signed in North America with Columbia Records.
A book licensed by One Direction, One Direction: Forever Young (Our Official X Factor Story), released in February 2011, topped The Sunday Times’ Best Seller list. The same month, the boy band performed for 500,000 people throughout the UK as part of the X Factor Live Tour. The group’s debut studio album Up All Night was released in November 2011. It topped the charts in 16 countries. The lead single, «What Makes You Beautiful», was an international commercial success, reaching number one in the UK and number four in the US; it has since been certified four and six times platinum in the US and Australia, respectively. Subsequent singles, «Gotta Be You» and «One Thing», became top ten hits in the UK. The band’s second studio album, Take Me Home, was released in November 2012. The record sold 540,000 copies in its first week in the US and went to number one in 35 countries. The album’s lead single, «Live While We’re Young», became One Direction’s highest peaking song in a number of countries and recorded the highest one-week opening sales figure for a song by a non-US artist at the time.
One Direction’s third studio album, 2013’s Midnight Memories, was a commercial success as well. Its number one debut on Billboard 200 made One Direction the first band in history to have their first three albums all debut atop the Billboard 200. With their fourth album, 2014’s Four, they extended the record to four consecutive number-one albums. As of March 2015, the band has sold 6.49 million albums and 23.7 million singles in the United States. The group has sold more than 50 million records globally. Malik quit the band on 25 March 2015, citing his desire to live as a «normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight», after signing off from the band’s On the Road Again Tour for an indefinite period six days prior due to stress. He denied rumors of any rift between the members, explaining that the band had been supportive of the decision. His last public performance in the name of One Direction was on the Road Again Tour in Hong Kong on 18 March 2015 in AsiaWorld Arena.
2015–2017: Mind of Mine
In March 2015, Malik was seen at a London recording studio with producer Naughty Boy. Following his departure from One Direction, Malik alluded to the potential of a solo career, with the release of his first solo studio album to be released under the Syco label in 2016. The same month Naughty Boy released on SoundCloud an early demo of Malik’s song «I Won’t Mind». In June 2015, UK rapper Mic Righteous leaked Malik’s «No Type», featuring Mic Righteous and produced by Naughty Boy, a cover version of Rae Sremmurd’s hip hop song. Malik also worked with grime rappers Krept & Konan during this time, but the material was never released after Malik parted ways with Naughty Boy. Though unreleased, his work with Naughty Boy and Krept & Konan helped Malik gain a new urban audience in the UK.
By July 2015 Malik announced he had signed a recording deal with RCA Records. Later that year, Malik gave several interviews where he talked about his debut solo studio album and revealed part of the track list. Talking with The Fader, he stated «life experiences have been the influences for the album and just stuff that I’ve been through, especially in the last five years». In a conversation with Billboard, Malik’s main collaborator for the album James «Malay» Ho said they have gone to unusual lengths in pursuit of inspiration during recording sessions, for one «we went camping for a week in the Angeles Forest – set up a generator and a tent so we could track in the woods.» In his first solo on-camera interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music’s Beats 1, Malik revealed Mind of Mine as the album’s title.
The album’s lead single, «Pillowtalk», was released in January 2016. The song debuted at number one in a number of countries, including the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100; on the latter, it became the 25th song to debut at number one, making him the first UK artist to debut at number one on the Hot 100 with a first charted single. The single’s performance propelled Zayn to number six on the Billboard Artist 100 chart. Worldwide, he had the highest first-day and weekly streams for a debut artist. The album’s second official single, «Like I Would», reached number one on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart. The end of February 2016 also saw the releases of the «Pillowtalk (Lil Wayne Remix)», which features American rapper Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown’s R&B song «Back to Sleep (Remix)», featuring Usher and Malik.
The album was released in March 2016 and includes songs co-written by Malik and a team of professional songwriters, whittled down from 46 tracks he reportedly considered for the album; one of the songs on the album features American R&B singer-songwriter Kehlani. Primarily R&B and alternative R&B, the album blends elements from a number of genres. Despite the variations in the sounds and genres, Mind of Mine is structured in an «album-as-complete-work» form, maintaining a tightly knit cohesion throughout the record, with an almost seamless transition between and across songs, while maintaining a recognisable, mostly downbeat, «hazy» tone throughout. This gives the album a continuous flow, and gives the impression that it all came from one person’s «mind.» The album has received generally positive reviews from music critics, with praise directed towards Malik’s new musical direction, his vocals, and the album’s music production.
Mind of Mine debuted at number one in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and United States, where he became the first British male solo artist to debut at number one with his first album. Zayn debuted atop the US Billboard 200 earning 157,000 equivalent album units in its first week, with 112,000 coming from pure album sales. Zayn is also the first UK male artist to debut at number one in both the UK and US, and the third artist to debut at number one on both the Billboard 200 and Hot 100 with debut entries on each chart (along with Lauryn Hill and Clay Aiken). Zayn also topped the Billboard Artist 100 chart, replacing Justin Bieber at the summit, and surpassing One Direction’s number-two peak on the chart.
The promotional tour for Mind of Mind included his second solo appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, performances on the Honda Stage at the iHeartRadio Theater and at the 3rd iHeartRadio Music Awards. In July 2016, «Cruel», which features Malik, was released by British production team Snakehips. By the end of 2016, Taylor Swift and Malik released a single together called «I Don’t Wanna Live Forever», for the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Darker (2017), which reached number one in Sweden. Malik has reportedly written an autobiography titled Zayn. He found the writing «therapeutic.»
2017–present: Icarus Falls
On 24 March 2017, Malik released the single «Still Got Time» in collaboration with PartyNextDoor. Malik announced the lead single from the new album «Dusk Till Dawn» featuring Sia through his social media. The single was released on 7 September 2017. The accompanying music video featured American actress Jemima Kirke and was directed by Marc Webb. In April 2018, Malik removed all content from his Instagram page and changed his icon on the website. Malik then released a teaser on various social media pages announcing new material coming 12 April 2018, later revealed as a song and video titled «Let Me».
On 2 August 2018, Malik released another track for his second solo album titled, «Too Much» featuring Timbaland. He will release an album called Icarus Falls on 14 December 2018.
In 2016, Malik made his debut on The Business of Fashion’s annual BoF500 index, which profiles the most influential people in fashion. In January 2017, he released a shoe line with Italian footwear designer Giuseppe Zanotti. The Giuseppe for Zayn capsule collection featured four shoe styles- two boots and two sneakers. In February 2017 the Versus (Versace) Spring Summer 2017 campaign featuring Malik and model Adwoah Aboah was released. In the same month he co-hosted the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s Americans in Paris annual cocktail during Paris Fashion Week. Donatella Versace, the chief designer of Versace, appointed Malik as the creative director for a men and women’s capsule collection entitled Zayn x Versus, which was made available in May 2017.
In September 2018, Malik designed a backpack line for the Kooples.
Malik cites urban music as his main musical influence, having grown up predominantly with R&B, hip hop, and reggae, as well as bop and Bollywood music. He was influenced by his father’s urban records, including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, R. Kelly, Usher, Donell Jones, Prince, 2Pac, Biggie, Gregory Isaacs, Yellowman and Chris Brown. Malik originally auditioned to be a solo R&B singer, before becoming part of One Direction. His R&B singing style stood out compared to the band’s pop rock style; he later cited creative differences as a reason for leaving the band. His solo work leans towards R&B and alternative R&B, and occasionally other genres, such as electro-R&B dance music («Like I Would»), hip hop («Pillowtalk» remix where Malik is rapping and rap-singing with Lil Wayne), neo-soul («Truth»), reggae («Do Something Good»), and Qawwali ghazal («Flower» where he uses Qawwali vocal techniques such as vocal elisions and warbling).
Malik possesses a wide tenor vocal range, and is known for his belting and falsetto singing techniques and hitting high notes with his vocals. He was regarded by Jamieson Cox in Time as the band’s strongest singer. Brad Nelson of The Guardian wrote «He was one of the more accomplished vocalists of the group, exhibiting the widest range. He mostly inhabited a silvery, full-bodied tenor, similar to but more sharp and precise than Harry Styles’ smoky warble», asserting that his departure would leave «a void of vocal agility».
Malik was known as the «Bradford Bad Boy» of One Direction, due to his mischievous behaviour, scandals, many tattoos, graffiti art, and rock star hairstyles. Since before X-Factor, Malik has been a fan of tattoos, saying that he likes «getting tattoos and that he loves the whole culture behind them.» His first tattoo was revealed on his Twitter account. Malik got his maternal grandfather’s name inked in Arabic: والتر (Walter). Since then, Malik has had several more tattoos. Discussing Malik’s possible solo career after leaving the boyband, Billboard editor Joe Lynch described him as «the quiet one in the group [. ] never the one to grab the spotlight during interviews. He typically saved his words for the songs, not for media soundbytes.»
In Pakistan, Malik is often named in the list of notable Pakistanis who live abroad. In 2011, he was ranked number 27 on Glamour ‘ s «World’s Sexiest Men» list. In 2014, Malik was voted British GQ ‘ s best dressed male. In 2015, he was voted the «Sexiest Male in Pop» in a poll by British radio network Capital, voted as the «World’s Sexiest Asian Man» based on a worldwide poll by the British newspaper Eastern Eye, voted second place in a poll of the «World’s top ten bachelors» by Manchester’s Crown Clinic, and ranked number six on MTV’s «50 sexiest men alive» list. In 2016, he was ranked number five on Glamour magazine’s «100 Sexiest Men» list. As of April 2016, Forbes estimates his online social media following (across Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Pandora) to be over 50 million users. Malik’s fandom is known as Zquad. In 2016, Malik was voted again as the «World’s Sexiest Asian Man» in a worldwide poll by the British newspaper Eastern Eye.
Malik began dating singer Perrie Edwards of Little Mix in early 2012; they got engaged in 2013. On 4 August 2015, Malik’s representative announced that the couple had ended their engagement a few weeks prior.
Malik began dating American model Gigi Hadid in late 2015. Hadid appeared in Zayn’s music video for «Pillowtalk». They appeared together on the August 2017 cover of Vogue. Malik and Hadid are the third couple to appear together on a Vogue cover, which courted controversy because of Vogue misnaming them as gender fluid, for which Vogue apologized. They also did a Versus (Versace) campaign as a couple, with Hadid as the photographer. On 13 March 2018, Hadid and Malik announced their split in separate statements on social media. In June 2018, Hadid confirmed their reconciled relationship on social media.
Malik was raised as a Muslim. In 2017, he said he identified as a non-practising Muslim, but said he did not «want to be defined by my religion or my cultural background.» He later told British Vogue in November 2018 that he would not call himself a Muslim anymore, and told that his parents accepted his adult decision to no longer identify with Islam. He generally prefers not to discuss religious topics in public.
He speaks English and Urdu, and can read Arabic. He had been a target of anti-Muslim slurs, which led to him deleting his Twitter account in 2012. During the 2014 Israel–Gaza conflict, Malik posted the message «#FreePalestine» on Twitter, resulting in him receiving angry responses and death threats. He has since avoided publicly expressing political views. He said that, prior to his music career, he had planned to pursue an academic degree in English or literature.
He is an official ambassador of the British Asian Trust charity group, contributing to improving the lives of disadvantaged people living in South Asia. With his former group One Direction, he contributed to African fundraising events with Comic Relief. In March 2016, he bought a box at Bradford City for underprivileged children to watch football, named after his maternal grandfather Walter Brannan.
Jellyfish Lake (Palauan: Ongeim’l Tketau, «Fifth Lake») is a marine lake located on Eil Malk island in Palau. Eil Malk is part of the Rock Islands, a group of small, rocky, mostly uninhabited islands in Palau’s Southern Lagoon, between Koror and Peleliu. There are about 70 other marine lakes located throughout the Rock Islands. Millions of golden jellyfish migrate horizontally across the lake daily.
Jellyfish Lake is connected to the ocean through fissures and tunnels in the limestone of an ancient Miocene reef. However the lake is sufficiently isolated and the conditions are different enough that the diversity of species in the lake is greatly reduced from the nearby lagoon. The golden jellyfish, Mastigias cf. papua etpisoni, and possibly other species in the lake have evolved to be substantially different from their close relatives living in the nearby lagoons.
Jellyfish Lake is stratified into two layers, an oxygenated upper layer (mixolimnion) and a lower anoxic layer (monimolimnion). The oxygen concentration in the lake declines from about 5 ppm at the surface to zero at 15 meters (at the chemocline). Stratification is persistent and seasonal mixing does not occur. The lake is one of about 200 saline meromictic lakes that have been identified in the world. However most of these lakes are of freshwater origin. Permanently stratified marine lakes are unusual, but on Eil Malk and on other nearby islands there are eleven other apparently permanent stratified marine lakes.
The stratification of the lake is caused by conditions which prevent or restrict the mixing of water vertically. These conditions include:
- The lake is surrounded by rock walls and trees which substantially block the wind flow across the lake that would cause mixing.
- The primary water sources for the lake (rain, runoff and tidal flows through tunnels) are all close to the surface.
- The lake is in the tropics where seasonal temperature variation is small, and so the temperature inversion that can cause vertical mixing of lakes in temperate zones does not occur.
The oxygenated layer extends from the surface to about 15 metres (49 ft). All organisms that require oxygen live in this layer including the jellyfish, a few species of fish and copepods. This layer is somewhat turbid. Visibility is limited to about 5 metres (16 ft). The salinity of this layer down to about 3 metres (9.8 ft) is affected by rain and runoff, and below this, salinity levels are unaffected by freshwater inputs.
The lake is connected to the sea via three tunnels that lie near the surface. The tunnels channel tidal water in and out of the lake. Tide levels in the lake are damped to about a third of the lagoon tidal levels. The tidal peaks are delayed from the lagoon tidal peaks by about 1 hour and forty minutes. Biologist William Hamner estimated that about 2.5% of the lake’s volume is exchanged during a tidal flow. However, because the tidal water enters at the surface, the lower anoxic layer is largely unaffected by tidal flows.
The anoxic layer extends from about 15 metres (49 ft) below the surface to the bottom of the lake. The oxygen concentration in this layer is zero. The hydrogen sulfide concentration rises from about zero at the top of this layer to over 80 mg/liter at the bottom of the lake. The top three meters of this layer contains a dense population of bacteria, at least one species of which is a purple photosynthetic sulfur bacterium. This bacterial layer absorbs all sunlight so that the anoxic layer below the bacterial plate is dark, but transparent. Hamner estimated the visibility to be about 30 meters. The anoxic layer also contains high concentrations of ammonia and phosphate which are almost completely absent from the upper layer. The anoxic layer is potentially dangerous for divers, who can be poisoned through their skin. This risk is mitigated as scuba diving equipment is not allowed in the lake, thus limiting the depths to which individuals may dive.
Jellyfish Lake is around 12,000 years old. This age estimate is based on the depth of the lake (about 30 meters), an estimate of the thickness of the sediment (at least 20 meters ) and the rising sea level since the end of the last ice age. About 12,000 years ago, the sea level had risen to the point that sea water began to fill the Jellyfish Lake basin.
Two species of scyphozoan jellyfish live in Jellyfish Lake, moon jellyfish (Aurelia sp.) and the golden jellyfish (Mastigias sp.).
Golden jellyfish Edit
The golden jellyfish are most closely related to the spotted jellyfish (Mastigias papua) that inhabit the nearby lagoons. They are similar to the spotted jellyfish in that they derive part of their nutrition from symbiotic algae (Zooxanthellae) that live in their tissues and part of their nutrition from captured zooplankton.
However, the golden jellyfish are morphologically, physiologically, and behaviourally distinct from the spotted jellyfish. They are easily distinguished from the spotted jellyfish by the almost complete loss of spots on the exumbrella and the almost complete loss of their clubs, an appendage attached to the oral arms.
Marine biologist Michael Dawson proposed that the golden jellyfish that inhabit Jellyfish Lake be classified as a subspecies (Mastigias cf. papua etpisoni) of the spotted jellyfish living in the nearby lagoons. The species identification is uncertain (denoted by cf. in the name) because the Mastigias papua local to Palauan lagoons may be only one of several cryptic species that make up the M. papua group, and in the future, the M. papua local to Palau may be identified as a separate species from other M. papua. He also proposed that the jellyfish living in four other Palauan marine lakes were distinctive enough to deserve recognition as unique subspecies.
Moon jellyfish Edit
The moon jellyfish were identified as Aurelia aurita by Hamner. However, since the release of that report in 1981, genetic testing has been done on specimens of Aurelia collected from locations throughout the world. The results of that testing indicate in addition to the three named species of Aurelia there are at least six other cryptic species in the genus. Three of the cryptic species identified were from Palau. One of these cryptic species is common to four of Palau’s marine lakes with jellyfish populations including Jellyfish Lake. Hence, the most accurate designation for the moon jellyfish in Jellyfish Lake (as of February 2001) is Aurelia sp. Despite the close proximity of Palau’s moon jellyfish cryptic species, Dawson and Jacobs stated that the molecular data suggested that they had not interbred for millions of years.
Golden jellyfish Edit
The golden jellyfish migration pattern is as follows:
- Night — For about 14 hours a day the jellyfish make repeated vertical excursions between the surface and the chemocline in the western basin possibly to acquire nitrogen and other nutrients from near the chemocline for their symbiotic algae.
- From early morning to about 0930 — The jellyfish move from center of western basin to the eastern basin
- From early afternoon to about 1530 — The jellyfish move from eastern basin to near western end of lake
- As the sun sets — The jellyfish move briefly eastward from western end to western basin where they remain through the night
The golden jellyfish rotate counter-clockwise as they swim at the surface, presumably to provide even exposure to the sun for the symbiotic algae in their bodies.
The Jellyfish Lake golden jellyfish migration pattern is similar to Mastigias sp. in other Palauan marine lakes and coves which all migrate west to east in the morning. However the migration patterns in other Palauan coves and marine lakes are less well defined than that of the Jellyfish Lake golden jellyfish. The east to west migration in all of these other lakes (except for Clear Lake on Eil Malk) does not begin until the late afternoon.
Hamner and Dawson proposed that the difference is caused by evolutionary change driven by the jellyfish-eating anemones (Entacmaea medusivora) that inhabit the eastern regions of Jellyfish Lake and Clear Lake. The jellyfish instinctively avoid shadows and in the morning with the shadows on the eastern end the jellyfish also avoid the anemones. By moving east to west in the early afternoon the jellyfish avoid the time of day when the setting sun would eliminate shadows on the lake in the eastern end and thereby avoid the anemones in the afternoon.
Moon jellyfish Edit
The moon jellyfish do not have an organized horizontal migration pattern. At night they migrate to the surface presumably to feed. The copepods that make up a significant portion of the moon jellyfish diet in Jellyfish Lake also migrate to the surface at night.
Golden jellyfish Edit
Beginning in about the fall of 1998, a precipitous decline in the golden jellyfish medusa population was detected in Jellyfish Lake. By December 1998, the medusa population had declined to zero.
Based on their extensive investigation of the disappearance of the golden jellyfish medusae, Dawson et al. determined that the most likely cause was an El Niño weather event that raised the water temperature, with the result that the symbiotic algae (Zooxanthellae) that live within the golden jellyfish medusae and the syphistomae (scyphozoan polyps) could not survive.
In January 2000, the golden jellyfish medusae were observed in Jellyfish Lake for the first time since April 1999. By May 2012, the medusae population had returned to pre-decline levels.
Dawson et al. also surveyed the golden jellyfish populations in three other Palauan marine lakes. They found significant changes in the medusa population in two of these lakes, Clear Lake on Eil Malk and Goby Lake on Koror. The golden jellyfish population in Big Jellyfish Lake, Koror did not seem to be affected. The reason for this was not clear, but Big Jellyfish Lake experienced lower temperature increases than the other lakes and there was experimental evidence that the golden jellyfish medusa from Big Jellyfish Lake were more tolerant of higher temperatures.
Although Clear Lake did not seem to have experienced the complete medusa population die-off that Jellyfish Lake did in 1998, the golden jellyfish medusae in Clear Lake are not always present. When conditions are not favorable for the short lived medusa stage or for syphistomae strobilation, the medusae disappear in Clear Lake. The medusa population is reestablished by syphistomae strobilation when conditions are favorable for strobilation and medusae again.
A significant reduction in the Jellyfish Lake medusa population had also been noted in 1987. This was previously attributed to turbulence generated by scuba diving that caused disturbance of the toxic layer. However, given that it occurred within the time frame when an unusually high sea surface temperature had been detected, it might reasonably be surmised that a rise in water temperature was the most likely cause of the 1998 die-off.
Moon jellyfish Edit
The moon jellyfish exhibited unusual damage in the 1998 time frame; however, the population seemed no smaller than usual.
Tourists are required to obtain a pass to access Jellyfish Lake. The Rock Islands/Jellyfish Lake pass is $100 and is good for 10 days.
Snorkeling in Jellyfish Lake is a popular activity for tourists to Palau. Several tour operators in Koror offer trips to the lake. Eil Malk island is approximately a 45-minute boat ride from Koror. The lake is accessed by a short trail from the beach on Eil Malk to the lake.
Scuba diving by tourists in the lake is not allowed. Two reasons are put forward for this:
- The bubbles from scuba tanks can harm the jellyfish if they collect beneath their bell.
- The anoxic layer that begins at about 15 meters contains high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide which can be absorbed through the skin of a diver which can lead to death.
Jellyfish Lake is currently the only one of Palau’s marine lakes open to tourists.
Safety considerations Edit
Although both species of jellyfish living in the lake have stinging cells (nematocytes), they are not in general powerful enough to cause harm to humans. It has been reported that it is possible to notice the stings on sensitive areas like the area around the mouth. The Fish ‘n Fins tour guide recommended that people with allergies to jellyfish consider wearing protective clothing.
Saltwater crocodiles are native to Palau but there has only been one death attributed to them in recent times and they are generally not considered a threat to divers.
The hydrogen sulfide in the anoxic layer is a serious risk to scuba divers entering this layer. The gas can be absorbed through the skin. In 1977, the maximum safe threshold level for hydrogen sulfide was set at 10 ppm. The concentrations exceed that by eightfold at the bottom of the anoxic layer. However, the hydrogen sulfide concentration down to the chemocline at about 15 metres (49 ft) is reported to be zero, and if the anoxic layer is avoided, the hydrogen sulfide in the lake does not pose a risk for snorkelers.
Malks are a kind of faerie, allied with the Winter Court.
They are about the size of a bobcat (sixty or seventy pounds), with feline characteristics. They tend to be found in large groups of twenty or more. They possess a raspy speech with odd inflections and unsettling intonations. Like all faeries, they are vulnerable to iron. They also dislike fire. They mark their territories with scratches on the walls.
Malks are stronger than natural animals, quick, almost invisible when they want to be, and their claws are sharper and harder than surgical steel. I once saw a malk shred an aluminum baseball bat to slivers. And if that wasn’t enough, they’re sentient. Smarter than some people I know. They’ll keep their word like any fae. if you can get them to give it in the first place. But think of how cats enjoy hunting, even when they aren’t hungry. Think about how they toy with their prey sometimes. Then distill that joyful little killer instinct out of every cat in Chicago and pour it all into one malk. They’re to cats what Hannibal Lecter is to people.
Their voices are extremely unsettling when they speak. They tend to run in packs of twenty to not be overpowered by adversaries.
The name ‘malk’ probably comes from the word ‘malkin,’ which is an archaic word for a cat. Also, ‘Grimalkin’ (or ‘Greymalkin’) is the name of a cat-like faerie creature in Scottish lore. (reference needed)
In the series Edit
Summer Knight Edit
In «Heorot», Harry Dresden creates an Illusion to get Gard and himself past a pack of malk by looking like malk.
Cold Days Edit
In Cold Days, a malk attacks Harry Dresden during one of his physiotherapy sessions.
Later, Mab assigns Cat Sith to Dresden as an assistant, and his voice deeply disturbs Molly Carpenter.

Malk is one of Julian’s most popular videos, having garnered over fifteen million views as of July 2012. The two minute long video premiered on Julian’s Youtube channel on November 5th, 2009. It is currently part of a playlist which includes ten of Julian’s most popular videos.
The video begins in Donnivin Jordan’s kitchen, where Julian and his friends Donnivin and Josh Lovell are hanging out. Donnivin is on his laptop and Julian is playing a game on his i-Phone. Josh asks if Donnivin has anything to drink, Donnivin points him to the fridge, prompting Josh to get up and open it. Julian asks Josh to get him some milk, which he mispronounces «malk.» This prompts Josh and Julian to argue about how it’s properly said.
This goes on for a while. Eventually, Josh asks Donnivin to back him up, which only makes things worse when Donnivin sides with Julian and uses a whole new pronunciation (mulk). The argument is then briefly cut off when Donnivin’s father (who’s white) comes in and asks them to use inside voices. Donnivin apologizes, blaming his «white friends.» After he leaves, the friends start yelling at eachother with their own interpretations of how milk is pronounced. This goes on until Josh pulls out a gun, telling the others to shut up. He then holds the gun to his head, threatening suicide. Julian and Donnivin then pull out their guns and point them at Josh until he points out it doesn’t make sense. Soon, all three friends point their guns at themselves, tearfully trying to talk eachother down.
The scene then shifts to Josh talking with Julian over the phone. it’s revealed that Josh was pitching the «Malk» skit to Julian for the possibility of filming it. Julian vehemently refuses to film it, citing that the sketch seems dark. It’s then shown that Julian is putting his pet cat Scout in the oven.
